Eating Jim’s Lunch: Tyler Florence’s Start Fresh cookbook
Somewhere, very soon, a grown man may cry over broccoli.

Jim, This Is Just To Say*
I have eaten
the leftovers
that were in
the icebox

and which
you definitely meant
to eat
for lunch

Forgive me
they were delicious
so tender
and so warm.

It’s rare when I jump to a recommendation without weeks of scrutiny, but Tyler Florence’s Start Fresh cookbook won me over as soon as I started reading it.

Nov. 16, 2011, by Jeremy Harlan

http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2011/11/16/homemade-baby-food/

CNN photojournalist Jeremy Harlan is based in Washington D.C. This is the third installment in a series on what to cook for a pregnant spouse – and now, a newborn. In this instance, beast is a loving term. Read the first and second installment.

You don’t ever want to meet Mungry. Trust me.

My wife and I have been super blessed with the most unfussy, spirited and sleep-loving baby. Lucy has truly been the model infant. But, when that lower lip begins to quiver and Sophie the Giraffe is flung head over hoof from the Bumbo perch, we know Lucy has left the dining room. We are now face to face with her very angry alter-ego: Mungry (Her scowled face looks as if she’s howling, ‘Mmmm, Hungry!”). These genes came from her dad. An unfed Harlan is a very unhappy Harlan.

For six months, my wife was able to satisfy the half-pint howler with breast milk. If she was not around, I had bottles of milk ready to go. But a month or so ago, we noticed Lucy was giving our food the eagle-eye. From her chair in the kitchen, she would stare at the chopping block while I cut colorful fruits and vegetables. We could no longer hold her at the dinner table because she would dive-bomb our plates. It was then we realized milk alone would not keep Mungry at bay.

As a new parent, it’s been hard to know when it’s time to transition your baby to new things. They develop so quickly. Just when you’re used to a routine, it’s time to move on to something new. Food is no different. But where in the world do you start?

“Your best place to start with a child is the very first spoon. You’ve got to start fresh,” believes Tyler Florence. “Your child is a blank palate that will literally taste anything.”

Speaking of sprouts…here’s mine before eating his lunch.

I was sent some Sprout Baby Food coupons for Tyler to try. Co-founder, Father, Chef, and Food Network Star, Tyler Florence co-created this organic baby food.

Each pouch is packaged in an eco-friendly, BPA free pouch.

“Our primary value is safe, healthy and delicious food products for children. If it isn’t safe, healthy and delicious, we don’t make it. Our ingredients and packaging are carefully chosen to make the best product possible.”

I make Tyler homemade baby food from organic vegetables and fruit but sometimes I don’t plan correctly and I tend to run out. I’ve been using Sprout Baby Food since our trip to the beach and he loves them. I haven’t found a flavor that he won’t eat. He even eats a whole pouch in one sitting but if needed, the pouch is designed to re-seal and can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Sprout Baby Food is made by a chef/father named Tyler Florence. He decided to come up with a baby food that is not only nutritious but also tasteful.

When I go to the grocery store, I am always looking for new baby food for my son to try. While I was in Winn-Dixie, they were having a sale on Sprout baby food. It was buy one get one free so I decided to grab each flavor they carried in the #3′s. Here are some of the flavors that I happened to pick up:

Don’t those look yummy?!

Oct. 11, 2011 by The Adventures of J-man & Millerbug

So, I know I’ve said it before but my MillerBug is P-I-C-K-Y!  He is not a fan of baby food in general.  So when I find a baby food that he eats without hesitation, I know that I have found a top notch baby food.  And the only true, pre-made baby food that he gives his seal of approval to is Sprout Organic Baby Food!

Sprout Organic Baby Food was created by Tyler Florence and was inspired by his desire to make baby food pure, nutritious and delicious.  His belief that children’s eating habits are developed by the time they enter school led him to rethink the way baby food had been made.  Instead of boring, tasteless options, he wanted to create baby food that mirrored the home made taste using techniques such as baking and roasting.  The result was the only complete line of baby and toddler foods that come in pouches with convenient resealable closures.  The food is cooked inside the pouch which helps to maintain it’s flavor, texture and nutrition!

Juliette Rosant, superchefblog.com, June 23, 2011

It is hard to argue with Tyler Florence when he is on the subject of baby foods, and why would you? Start Fresh: Your Child’s Jump Start to Lifelong Healthy Eating (Rodale 2011) features Tyler (in profile) on the cover with his daughter (who is the focus of the picture) sitting on the counter, wearing fairy wings and pigtails feeding him a spoonful from her little bowl. That’s the way it should be: parents preparing and sharing good food with their children.

Tyler launched Sprout, a line of organic baby food – he knows what baby food. His aim was to market good tasting (even to adults) baby food:

After a little coaxing, and seeing their babies licking the spoon clean, a few brave souls actually tasted it and all said, “Wow, I had no idea baby food could taste this good.” (We also saw a few executives from the old-guard baby food companies try a few samples and walk away hastily banging on their PDAs. Now that’s an e-mail I would love to read.) (p. xiv)

Start Fresh is not an exhaustive book – it is really for parents who already have an idea of what they want to feed their baby and need a little helping hand with interesting recipes that will encourage baby not to be a picky eater.

It starts with Single-Ingredient Purees, and then a chapter on Flavor Combos (6-8 months) followed by Foods with Texture (9-12 months) and Everyone to the Table (12 months and beyond). The introduction goes of methods of cooking – steaming, roasting, and pureeing, There is a handy two page calendar for writing when new foods are introduced to make sure not to trigger allergies.

The foods with texture include recipes like Roasted Golden Beets with Quinoa and Feta (p. 60). There is a pretty photo by John Lee of a bowl of with a child’s green spoon. The creamy feta will hold the tiny grains of quinoa together so that not all of it ends up on the floor. Tyler introduces big flavors like Ginger Chicken with Coconut (p. 69) that includes fresh ginger, cilantro, and lime. There is also NY Strip with Asian Vegetables (p. 81) a kind of beef and vegetable stir-fry that parents can enjoy, too.

The last chapter showcase even more parent-friendly recipes like Minestrone (p. 107) and Barbecue Turkey Meatloaf Cupcakes with Mashed Potato Frosting (p. 125).

Tyler’s message: keep playing with your food!

There are a lot of things that I wish I could go back and do differently when my daughter was an infant. For one thing, I would’ve made the effort to breastfeed her for more than 2 days. Yes, it was painful, but I imagine the bonding time and health benefits would’ve far outweighed the pain. I also wish I’d been more selective about the baby food I gave her. Ideally, I would’ve preferred to make my own baby food. But because spending a lot of time in the kitchen isn’t something I take a lot of pleasure in, organic baby food would’ve been great too.
Sprout Organic Baby Food ironically started out as a way to make one mom’s life easier (sounds like a great idea to me), and it later turned into a mission to change the way parents introduce their children to solid foods. It was created by chef Tyler Florence of Food Network fame (shown below). He believes that by the time kids
enter school, their eating habits are already established. So he developed the Sprout line using premium organic ingredients to help foster a lifelong appreciation for healthy eating.
