our packaging

We designed our packaging to provide you with delicious food in a pouch that ensures your food is both safe and convenient. Over three years of research went into a patent-pending structural design1 that protects your child’s nutrition, safety and environmental future. Our packaging is constructed of layers of proprietary BPA-free materials that are proven to be safe for food processing. We have included a foil layer to preserve the nutritional profile as well as the flavor and color of our food, which is the reason why Sprout Baby food cannot be microwaved in the pouch. Placing the pouch of baby food as suggested in warm water will not alter its structure.

The Environment

Reducing Waste and Energy Usage:

Sprout Foods, Inc. has a strong commitment to the environment. We believe in looking at the overall picture, because if you look at just one piece of the puzzle, it can lead to an emphasis in the wrong place.

The objectives of our Company in using pouch packaging are to reduce waste, and to reduce energy consumption in the manufacturing and transportation of our products, while still providing the customer with a high-quality convenience product. In comparing the pouch to glass, which is the material used in the majority of baby food products, we found that the energy (fossil fuels) used over the entire life of the glass package for its manufacture and transport far exceeds the energy that goes into the manufacturing and transporting of a pouch package. This means significant environmental gains in terms of CO2 emission and solid waste disposal in pouches over traditional packaging.

Recycling:

We have taken into consideration many of our customers’ desire to recycle and are working to find a manufacturer that can produce a food-safe pouch that can be recycled. Even so, not all products that can be recycled are, for two main reasons: consumers’ options can be limited by the fact that the types of plastics accepted by local municipalities are commonly limited to PETE and HDPE codes 1 and 2, or facilities are not available, and, not all consumers actively recycle.

Recycling is important, and a recyclable package is a goal we strive toward, but it can be more environmentally sound with existing technology to reduce the amount of material generated in the first place and the amount of fuel used in transporting product to retailers.
